Loftus Poultry Run - Sunday 22nd December 2013 (full results) |
This event, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, was held on a bitingly cold morning just before christmas. Many of the runners were in fancy dress. The run is approximately 8 miles and covers country lanes, bridleways, footpaths and muddy farmer's fields. The course is generally ascending for the first three miles of the race, then downhill for a mile of mud, then a steep climb at approximately half-way to the Boulby mast, the high point on the North Yorkshire Coast. It is then an exhilarating downhill run down to the finish where a mince pie and glass of wine awaits the runners! The winner was Russ Best (New Marske Harriers) in a time of 42:32. There were 492 finishers. |

Barnsley 10km - Sunday 17th November 2013 (full results) |
Twelve Striders competed in this race which doubled as a counter for our road race championships and the South Yorkshire 10km Championships. Staring and finishing in Royston, this isn't the quickest course about with an uphill start, over grass. The route then climbs for nearly two miles whilst the last mile is uphill too. The bit in between is ok though. The race was won by Doncaster AC's Carl Ryde in 33:02 whilst first lady was Fiona Davies of Kingstone Runners in 38:28. Our very own Mary Craig picked up a voucher for twenty quid for winning her age category so she's also South Yorkshire Champion over 10km. There were 619 finishers. |

National X-Country Relays, Mansfield - Saturday 2nd November 2013 (full results) |
Report by Carol Beattie
One of the most popular and enjoyable events in the Cross Country calendar, the National Cross Country Relay Championships, was held at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield in early November. It was the 25th time that the event has been held and there was an almost record entry of 1,123 teams across all the races. As ever, there was a strong field in the senior men's race: 210 teams featuring many of the best cross country runners in the country, though sadly no team this year from Steel City Striders. We did have a women's team though: Alison Barrett, Jenny Rich and me. The weather was blustery with some very heavy downpours, luckily not while we were actually out on the course. The ground was quite firm, given all the rain we'd had, with just a couple of muddy sections where the course twists and turns through the woods. Alison led off and ran a cracking first leg in a time of 13:13; I covered leg 2 a bit more sedately (as befits my more mature years) in a time of 15:36 and Jenny ran a fantastic anchor leg in a time of 13:04. We finished 74th out of 99 teams. We were happy with that bearing in mind that the field included the likes of Steph Twell and Lily Partridge!

Passing Clouds Fell Race (9.8 miules) - Sunday 27th October 2013 (full results) |
Two Striders completed this race, which is something of a warm up for the Roaches two weeks later as both races follow the same route for a couple of miles along the Roaches ridge. This was the day of the storm, with strong winds and lashing rain building up from the south west. Another great race, won by Simon Bailey (Mercia) in 1:09:19 and Kerry Marchant (Staffs Moorlands) in 1:29:04. There were 198 finishers.

Frankfurt marathon - Sunday 27th October 2013 (full results) |
With a reputation for being one of the fastest courses in the world, the runners must have all been looking forward to new PBs. But reports from Striders suggest that the less than ideal weather and slightly chaotic first kilometres (starting pens mismanaged and spectators getting in the way) slightly marred what would otherwise have been a great event all round. Another fantastic run from Dave Palmer, who only just missed another PB. The winner was Vincent Kipruto in 2:06:15. First lady was Caroline Kilel in 2:22:34. There were 14,381 finishers. |

Worksop half marathon - Sunday 27th October 2013 (full results) |
The super storm that was forecast never arrived, but the gusting winds made for less than ideal conditions at what is traditionally one of the quicker local half marathons. The winner was James Mee (Heanor Running Club) in 1:09:01. First lady was Natalie Farrow (Lincoln Wellington AC) in 1:24:33. There were 1,690 finishers. The race was a counter in the Road Race Championships. |

Yorkshire marathon - Sunday 20th October 2013 (full results) |
The inaugural Yorkshire Marathon (starting and finishing at York University) took place on a decent day for marathon running – cool and overcast. The wind threatened to blow across the exposed course at several points throughout the race but never really picked up to serious levels. There was a spot of rain at the start but none after. The course is largely rural and aside from one slight hill before halfway, pretty much as flat as you’ll get in these parts. Organised by the people behind the Jane Tomlinson charity, it was always going to be high on non-club runners, but the top end of the field included a few very swift athletes. With a fast winning time and a generous prize fund, expect this race to attract more high calibre runners in the future. The winner was Edwin Korir in 2:13:31. First lady (and 11th overall) was Helen Koskei in 2:40:06. There were 3,885 finishers. |

Amsterdam marathon - Sunday 20th October 2013 (full results) |
Report from Official website
Mr Amsterdam made a triumphant return to the Dutch capital’s biggest long-distance event on Sunday, as Wilson Chebet became the first athlete ever to win the Amsterdam Marathon three times in a row. What’s more, the Kenyan managed to break his course record for the second consecutive year, beating his previous time by six seconds, He ran the 42.2 kilometre race in two hours, five minutes and 35 seconds this time around. Chebet has lowered his time by an average of almost six seconds per year since he won his first Amsterdam Marathon in 2011, where his time of two hours, five minutes and 53 seconds was good enough to win back then. Chebet was made to fight hard for his Dutch win, as Bernard Koech led for a decent portion of the race before eventually slipping back into his ultimate finish in third. In the women’s race, 20-year-old Valentine Kipketer came out on top, as the youngster smashed her previous personal best by one minute and 31 seconds, finishing in a time of two hours, 23 minutes and two seconds. In January of this year, Kipketer managed her previous best at the Mumbai Marathon, but conditions played their role on this occasion. The occasion marks another Kenyan double at this marathon, which hasn’t happened since 2008 when Paul Kirui and Lydia Cheromei took home winning honours. There were 11,307 finishers including one Strider.. |

British Fell and Hill Relay Championships - Sunday 20th October 2013 (men - full results) |
Report by Andy Buck
18 Striders made the journey to Llanberis in Snowdonia for the culmination of the fell running season – the British Fell and Hill Relay Championship – and joined over 1,000 other athletes, among them the very best fell runners from all the top clubs.
Seven of us gathered the night before, camping at the base of the very hills we would take to the following day. Huge plates of lasagne, spinach and cheese pie or fish and chips were consumed at the iconic Pete’s Eats, the gathering point for generations of climbers and walkers, followed by topping up the pre-race carbo-load in the nearby Heights bar. Squally showers peppered the night. A few Striders opted for B&B, and the remaining nine arrived early on race day.
Race HQ was mercifully on a levelled plot of old slate quarry – no risk of knee deep mud around our tent. Numbers, sportident dibbers and maps were distributed, and the 10am start approached. 182 runners assembled, were briefed, and taken a little further down the hill to start as the rain and wind gathered force. Mark Dickinson, Simon Wiles and Helen Davis led off for our open, vets and women teams for the 7.4km, 350m ascent first leg. 33 minutes later Hunters Bog Trotters’ Murray Strain returned, almost a minute ahead of his nearest competitor. The impressive Katie Walshaw from Holmfirth Harriers led the women’s race by 15 seconds. Mark ensured that our open team was in the top half of the field, and Simon and Helen both held their own.
Leg two, run in pairs, promised to be an altogether tougher prospect – 14.3km and 990m, reaching an altitude of 726m on Moel Eilio, with a monster climb of 400m in little over a kilometre. Steve Hargreaves had spent the previous few weeks been endeavouring to strike the fear of god into partner Paul Stuart – but Paul held his own, and the pair posted a time well in the top half of the race, 22 minutes behind the legendary Rob Jebb and Ian Holmes from Bingley. Phil Howson and David Parry brought the vets team back 30 minutes or so later, with Carol Beattie and Kate Wilkinson not far behind – having had to cling onto each other to prevent being blown away on the high ridges!
The third leg is traditionally the navigation leg – all we know beforehand is the likely distance and ascent – 12.4km and 915m. Stephen Atkinson and Wayne Forster led off for the open team, embarking on their first ever navigation race. Maps were collected at the end of the starting straight, and a flagged route led to open country, from where route choice became critical. Ian Stinson and Andy Buck, and Alison Barrett and Helen Calder took the leg for the vets and women teams. The wind and rain did not aid concentration, and the optimal route to the second checkpoint was far from obvious. A long contouring traverse, and steep descent and climb, well away from any paths, followed to check three, and then a descent, climb and descent to check four. A couple of km respite on a good track followed, but then another three checks with no paths. And then the sting in the tail – the steep, wet and muddy descent to the finish, past the now notorious Matt’s Lagoon which saw dozens of runners fall and submerge themselves in the mud and water. Stephen and Wayne lost time having missed checkpoint five – necessitating a sapping descent and ascent. Ian and Andy just about held their own, with Alison and Helen chasing hard behind and picking up a few places.
Well before our leg three teams returned the leading teams had completed leg four. By the end of leg three, the overall race had been taking shape. Dark Peak’s Ollie Johnson and Lloyd Taggart posted the quickest leg three time, over five minutes ahead of the next best time. More importantly, their time left the team 12 minutes ahead of nearest rivals Mercia. Dark Peak’s strength in depth was beginning to show, with their B team rising to fourth place. Mercia’s 2012 English champion Simon Bailey could only haul back 25 seconds on leg four, whilst Dark Peak B did just enough to take third place.
The vets race was tighter, with 12 minutes separating the leading four teams at the end of leg three. Borrowdale retained their lead from Calder Valley, with Dark Peak again rising from fourth to third. Carnethy won the vet 50 class, with Dark Peak in third.
The women’s race was more settled at the end of leg three, with six, eight and nine minutes separating the first four places, with no change during leg four. Hunters Bog Trotters were first, Ambleside second and – guess who? - Dark Peak in yet another third place.
15 minutes after the women’s winners crossed the line, Dean Young set off on the anchor leg, followed by Matt Surgeon and Katie Rockliff. Dean hauled back a few places, Matt let a few slip (and took an early bath in his eponymous lagoon), and Katie protected the women’s position.
We had a fantastic day – this was fell running at its best. The courses were excellent, the organisation first class, and the weather mattered not a jot. The top teams really are very good athletes, but as with all fell races there is support and respect for all the runners. Paul Stuart is still relishing his couple of hours enticing runners into and out of the lagoon! And after two years with just one team, it was great to have three complete teams.
Thank you to all our team members, to Eryri Harriers who organised the event, and to Striders for paying our entry fees. Next year’s championship is closer at hand – Kirkby Lonsdale on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales.

Chester marathon - Sunday 13th October 2013 (full results) |
This full marathon attracted nearly 2,951 competitors, amongst them was 9 Striders who trained together as a team for the event. The start and finish was at Chester Racecourse close to Chester city centre, which provided a spectacular backdrop and outstanding facilities for both runners and spectators. The route was largely flat - only 101m of climb- with some short hills or gradual climbs predominantly in the second half of the course so ideal for fast times. The race was won by Marius Ionescu (Altrincham & District Athletic) in a time of 2:21:42. |

Cusworth 10km - Sunday 6th October 2013 (full results) |
An undulating rural course with no real sharp hills, and a warm dry day with little wind meant this was a day for fast times. Whether any of the Striders were satisfied with their times was a different matter. The race was won by Fikre Indell Wondiye (Unattached) in 31:36 – two and a half minutes clear of second place! First lady was Jayne Baldwin (Doncaster AC) in 39:23. There were 431 finishers – a dozen of whom were disqualified by the race referee, Keith Binney, for wearing headphones. This race was a counter in the Road Race Championships. |
